Our History

The Adelaide Harmony Choir was founded in 1947 by Lewis Dawe, MBE, who conducted the choir until 1981.John Hall succeeded him, followed in 2008 by Richard Chew and Rosemary Nairn in 2011. Our present Musical Director, Andrew Chatterton, commenced in 2016.Since its inception the choir has built a fine reputation in the performance of oratorios and major choral works by Bach, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Verdi, Dvorak, Walton, Britten, Lloyd-Webber and Jenkins. Other concert works include opera choruses, excerpts from music theatre, carols, spirituals, madrigals, and a wide range of sacred music. We have also commissioned original works. Artistic collaborators have included the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Adelaide Festival of Arts, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Elder Conservatorium and the State Opera of South Australia. The choir enjoyed many successes in choral competitions including Eisteddfods and the Royal South Street Ballarat Competitions. Concert tours took them overseas, interstate and within South Australia. New Zealand, Texas, Vancouver, Seattle, New York, Japan and China were all overseas destinations and audiences in Merimbula, Narooma, Canberra, Leigh Creek, Waikerie, Bendigo and Tanunda have all enjoyed performances by members of the Choir. The Choir has performed two seasons of Mendelssohn’s Elijah on stage and sang the work at Kingston and Naracoorte. In addition the Choir has lent support to many local charities, sung at the Juia Farr Centre, Mary Potter Hospice and for 35 years was a contributor to Carols by Candlelight.
